BATON ROUGE — Several Tiger student-athletes will be at the LSU Child Care Center on Tuesday to read to the children as part of the inaugural Scholastic Book Fair.

Kelly Phelan, Garrett Temple and Andre Gill will be at the center at various times during the day to help promote literacy and books by reading to the children.

Phelan, sophomore on the third-ranked gymnastics team, was the SEC Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 14 after helping the Tigers to their first win over Georgia since 1995. The Orlando, Fla., native also won her first collegiate all-around title against Arkansas on Feb. 4 and is nationally ranked on the floor and beam.

A freshman on the basketball team, Temple took a redshirt year this season. The Baton Rouge native is the brother of former LSU standout Collis Temple III and the son of former Tiger great Collis Temple II.

Gill, a senior wide receiver on the football team, moved to offense last season after two years at defensive back. The walk-on from Beverly Hills, Calif., is majoring in mechanical engineering and is the second oldest member of the team.

The LSU Child Care Center is a high-quality child care program offered to students, staff, and faculty, while serving as a resource for the community, state, and nation. The inclusion of academic and research components assists the provision of an appropriate environment for the growth and development of children.

The CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success)/Life Skills Program was designed by the NCAA to help student-athletes realize higher academic achievement, increase likelihood of graduation and enter a chosen profession with a higher level of vision, knowledge, motivation, self-responsibility and greater overall success. In Spring 2003, the CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program honored one of LSU’s most memorable graduates, Shaquille O’Neal, by naming the program after him.
