BATON ROUGE — LSU sprinter Kelly Baptiste will travel to her native country of Tobago this weekend to participate in the Carifta Games, while distance runners Jimmy Wiggins and Sam Mwape will head to California to compete in the Stanford Invitational Friday.
Baptiste is scheduled to run both the 100 and 200 meters as well as the 4×100-meter relay for Tobago at the Carifta Games. The meet, a championship event for athletes under the age of 20 from the surrounding Caribbean nations, will run this Saturday through Monday at the Dwight Yorke Stadium on the island of Bacolet.
Wiggins and Mwape will open their outdoor seasons Friday, running the 10,000 meters at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field. The senior duo will take on the best in the nation as over 90 participants are scheduled to run in the two-section final that begins at 10:30 p.m. (CT).
The rest of the LSU track and field team begins the outdoor campaign at home this weekend, running in the LSU Tiger Relays at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Competition begins today with the multi-events and continues Friday and Saturday with open events for both the high school and college divisions.
