WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Diver Jessica Wantz and swimmer Heather Brand competed for LSU as day one of the 2005 Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close on Thursday night from the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Wantz completed a brilliant career, placing 21st in the 1-meter springboard preliminaries with a score of 257.10 this afternoon. She leaves behind a legacy that includes three All-America honors and two SEC Diver of the Week awards.
As one of the squad’s team captains, Wantz displayed steadfast leadership with tremendous talent.
“She has been one of the most talented divers I have ever coached,” said diving coach Doug Shaffer. “She has been motivated and leads by example, and she is always on time. She has represented LSU very well and helped develop the program into a new era.”
Wantz earned first-team All-America honors in the 3-meter and 1-meter in 2004 and captured her first accolade as a sophomore in the 3-meter in 2003. Earlier this season, she won an amazing 12 consecutive events.
Brand was the Lady Tigers’ lone swimmer competing on Thursday, racing in the 50 freestyle. The junior placed 49th in the prelims with a time of 23.45.
Brand will also swim in the 100 butterfly on Friday, day two’s third event. She will carry the 35th seed into the prelims, which get underway at 11 a.m.
