No. 14 Lady Golfers Ready for Lady Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S. C. — The LSU women’s golf team, ranked 14th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings begins two consecutive weekends of play Friday with the first round of the Lady Gamecock Invitational sponsored by the University of South Carolina.

The Lady Tigers after this 54-hole tournament which concludes on Sunday comes home to the University Club in Baton Rouge to host the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic starting on Friday, March 18.

The field besides LSU and South Carolina includes Alabama, Augusta State, East Tennessee State, Florida State, Furman, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia. New Mexico is 13th-ranked in the Golfweek rankings and Furman is ranked 20th in the country.

LSU is coming off two straight sub-300 rounds to finish the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla., to finish fourth in that event. LSU veterans Vicky Meyer and Brooke Shelton were LSU’s two top finishers in the event with Meyer finishing 15th at seven-over 223 and Shelton at eight-over 224 to finish 16th.

LSU has been a regular participant in the Lady Gamecock at the USC University Club with the Lady Tigers best finishes a second in 2000 and a third in 2001. Last year LSU finished seventh with a score of 75-over par.

“This is an important two weeks for us as we start to turn the corner for the post-season,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We’ve had a chance to work on a few of the things that bothered us in the first tournament and we look forward to the chance to get back out there and compete.”
