BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Lauren Castle and Emily Turner have been selected the Louisiana Softball Players of the Week, as announced by the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association on Wednesday.
Castle, the designated player for the Tigers, was 12-of-22 last week for a .545 batting average as LSU went 6-0 and claimed the Purple & Gold Challenge championship. Named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, the junior from Lafayette led the Purple & Gold Challenge in hits, runs scored and total bases. She tallied two doubles, a triple and her first home run of the season for a .864 slugging percentage.
Against Ohio, she tied the school single-game record for hits with a 4-for-4 performance against Ohio. In addition, she posted a career-best four RBIS. Castle also knocked in the game-ending run in a 10-2 run-rule win over Columbia. She had three multiple-hit games while posting a hit in every game to run her hitting streak to seven games.
Turner went 3-0 on the week in three complete-game appearances. The sophomore from Chula Vista, Calif., allowed only six hits in 17 innings, including three two-hitters. Against Columbia, she struck out a career-best 14 batters and averaged almost 10 strikeouts per game on the week.
