BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Lady Tiger track and field team will enter this weekend’s NCAA Championships ranked No. 3 in the country, while the Tigers will be No. 7 according final Trackwire 25 rankings of the indoor season.
Coming off a win at the SEC Championships, Tennessee reclaimed the top spot in the women’s poll earning 45 points. Stanford (44) dropped one spot to No. 2 and the Lady Tigers (42) held on to the No. 3 position for a second week. Florida (38) and Nebraska (35) round out the top five.
Arkansas maintained its hold on the men’s No. 1 ranking for the entire indoor season. The Razorbacks top this week’s standing with 55 points. Florida (46) and Michigan (38) are second and third, respectively, while Indiana and Auburn are knotted at No. 4 with 31 points apiece. The Tigers moved up three spots into seventh with 27 points.
In the individual event rankings, LSU has eight athletes and two relay teams ranked among the country’s top 12.
Senior Hazelann Regis owns the No. 1 ranking in the women’s 200 meters as well as the No. 2 ranking in the 400 meters. She also anchors the Lady Tigers’ top ranked 4×400-meter relay team.
Sophomore Tina Harris is listed at No. 2 in the long jump and senior Neisha Bernard-Thomas is third in the 800 meters. Freshmen Kelly Baptiste and Ashley Owens are 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 60-meter dash.
For the Tigers, freshman Xavier Carter and senior Kelly Willie are ranked second in the 200 and 400 meters, respectively. They also each run a leg on the Tigers’ 4×400-meter relay team that is also ranked No. 2 in the country this week.
Senior Willie Bradley is the Tigers’ other only ranked competitor. He enters the national championships listed at No. 6 in the triple jump.
LSU closes out the 2005 indoor schedule this weekend when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the NCAA Championships.
