BATON ROUGE — Six LSU swimmers will have one final official competition to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships as the two-day Bulldog Invitational gets underway from Georgia’s Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday.
“The Last Chance” meet will feature time trials for those swimmers on the bubble with NCAA “B” cut times in qualifying for respective events.
Two freshman will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships in their first seasons at LSU. Miko Malberg, who has had an outstanding first-year campaign, will compete in the 50 freestyle. Malberg is attempting to elevate his current “B” cut of 20.0 that was clocked at the SEC Championships last weekend. Kevin Braud could solidify his hopes for a championship appearance in the 100 and 200 backstroke events.
Heather Brand currently has a bubble time of 54.6 in the 100 butterfly. Lauren Harvey and Colleen Bertirotti will participate in two individual events, before joining Brand and Lindsay Staak in medley relays.
The Women’s NCAA Championships will take place, March 17-19 in West Lafayette, Ind. The men’s championships get underway the following week, March 24-26 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Meanwhile, the LSU divers continue championship action, March 11-13 at the NCAA Zone B Diving Regionals from Atlanta, Ga.
