Six Student-Athletes Honored for Academic Success

BATON ROUGE — The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for the month of February.

Elena Sutherland, Ashley Thomas, Glenn Dorsey, Kimberly Meck and Miko Malberg were selected as the student-athletes of the month for February, while Mallory McDonald was chosen the Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills Student-Athlete of the Month.

Each month, five student-athletes will be honored for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete will be honored through the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.

Sutherland is a freshman defender on the women’s soccer team. The Sugar Land, Texas, native recorded one shot last season for the Tigers. In addition, she played for the 2001 ODP National Championship team.

A freshman forward on the women’s basketball team from Stone Mountain, Ga., Thomas is out for the season after tearing ligaments in her knee against Rutgers. She scored a career-best six points against Texas State and a pulled down a career-high six rebounds against Tulane.

Davis is a freshman defensive tackle on the football team. One of four players to start as true freshmen last season, he recorded 17 tackles, including one and a half for loss, and recovered one fumble.

A freshman on the women’s golf team from Austin, Texas, Meck won every regular season event she entered as a senior in high school, never recording a round above par. This past fall, she recorded two top 25 finishes, including a 16th-place finish at the Central District Classic.

Malberg is a freshman on the men’s swimming team that swims the freestyle and the butterfly. The Tallinn, Germany, native finished 10th in the finals at the SEC Championships in the 50-yard freestyle.

A thrower on the women’s track and field team, McDonald recently spoke a group of National Guard Youth Challenge participants about overcoming adversity.

These are six student-athletes that have gone the extra mile during the past month. For their efforts, they will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the CCACSA.
