BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Brandon Bass and Sylvia Fowles were named Men’s and Women’s Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, it was announced on Wednesday.

Bass, a 6-8 sophomore forward, led the Tigers to wins at Mississippi State and over Florida last week. The Baton Rouge native averaged 24.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in the two wins, including a 21-point, 17 rebound performance at Mississippi State and 27 points and five rebounds against the Gators. For his efforts, Bass was also named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.

Fowles, a 6-5 freshman center, led the Lady Tigers to wins over Kentucky and at Auburn to remain perfect in Southeastern Conference play. The Miami, Fla., native averaged 13.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in the two games and averaged a double double for the third straight week. At Auburn, Fowles poured in 19 points, grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and collected four blocked shots in the victory.

The LSWA selects a weekly Player of the Week for men’s and women’s basketball from a list of nominations submitted by the state schools.
