BATON ROUGE — LSU forward Brandon Bass, who has excelled for the men’s basketball team both on the court and in the classroom, was named a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Six team named Thursday by presenting organization CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors Association of America).
District Six represents student-athletes in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Student-athletes must be a sophomore in standing and have a GPA of at least 3.20.
Bass, who has a 3.45 GPA, will join the other four players on the District 6 team as eligible to be voted by the CoSIDA members for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American team for men’s basketball, to be announced next month.
Bass, who had 21 points and 17 rebounds in LSU’s 80-72 win at Mississippi State Wednesday night, was the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2004 and a member of the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. This season he is averaging a team best 17.1 points per game, while also averaging 8.7 rebounds a game and 1.8 blocks a game. He is shooting 57.4 percent from the field and is ranked in the top 10 in several league statistical categories. In the classroom in the fall, he had four A’s and one B in his 15 hours of classroom work.
The other members of the District 6 team are: Eric Castro, Sr., SMU (3.80 GPA); Troy DeVries, Sr., New Mexico (3.52 GPA); Jason Grant, Jr., Lamar (3.506 GPA); and Shane Power, Sr., Mississippi St. (3.37 GPA).
