BATON ROUGE — After guiding LSU to its first win over perennial national power Georgia in 10 years, sophomore Kelly Phelan was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday.
The honor marks the first of Phelan’s career and the second for a Tiger athlete this season. April Burkholder was first recognized during the week of Jan. 24.
Phelan turned in the second best all-around performance of her career, scoring a 39.250 against the Gym Dogs, to help the Tigers secure their first win over the UGA in Baton Rouge since the 1987 season. The Orlando native finished just .05 points out of first in the all-around standings, while placing among the top six on three of the four events. She turned in scores of 9.850 on the vault, 9.825 on the bars and floor and 9.750 on the beam.
The performance returned Phelan to the national all-around rankings, where she sits at No. 23 in the country this week with a season average of 39.131. She is also listed at No. 15 on the beam, No. 20 on the floor and No. 24 on the vault.
The LSU gymnastics team returns to action this weekend when they travel to Lexington, Ky., Feb. 18 and Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 20 for a pair of dual meets with No. 20 Kentucky and No. 22 Ohio State, respectively.
