Gymnastics Remains No. 3 in National Rankings

BATON ROUGE — The LSU gymnastics team remains No. 3 in the country for a second straight week according to the latest national rankings released Monday.

The poll’s top three is unchanged from a week ago as Utah continues to top the standings with a season average of 196.350. Michigan is second (196.250) and the Tigers follow while improving their average to 196.158 this season.

Florida jumped two spots to No. 4 (196.055) and Alabama (195.921) slipped one spot to round out the top five.

For the second consecutive week, the Tigers find themselves ranked among the top-10 nationally on each of the four individual events. LSU held on to its No. 2 ranking on the floor, moved up one position to No. 3 on the bars and improved to No. 4 on the vault. In addition, the Tigers are ranked seventh on the beam.

In the individual rankings, sophomore Kelly Phelan returned to the all-around standings after another strong performance against Georgia last week. Phelan comes in at No. 23 with a season average of 39.131. She is also ranked 20th on the floor (9.854) and 24th on the vault (9.842).

Freshman Ashleigh Clare-Kearney owns the Tigers’ top individual ranking again this week, improving to fifth on the floor with a season average of 9.894.

Junior April Burkholder and sophomore Nicki Butler are listed among the top 15 this week. Burkholder is ranked 10th on the uneven bars (9.858) and Butler in 11th on the vault (9.867).

Also in the rankings are senior Annie Gagnon and sophomore Lisa Rennie. Gagnon is listed at 14th in the uneven bars (9.842) and Rennie, the winner of three straight beam titles, cracked the rankings on the event, coming in at No. 24 with a 9.808 season average.

The Tigers return to action this weekend when they travel Lexington, Ky., Feb. 18 and Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 20 for dual meets with No. 20 Kentucky and No. 22 Ohio State, respectively.
