Tigers Up to No. 5, Lady Tigers Hold Steady at No. 2

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s men’s track and field team cracked the top five in the national rankings for the first time this season, while the women remained at No. 2 for a fifth straight week according to the latest Trackwire 25, released Tuesday.

SEC foe Arkansas tops the men’s standing for a fifth consecutive week with 70 points. Indiana moved up one spot to No. 2 (44) and Michigan slipped down one position to No. 3 (33). Texas held steady at No. 4 (28) and the Tigers jumped two spots to No. 5 with 27 points.

In the women’s rankings, Stanford took over the No. 1 position for the first time this season. The Cardinal sit atop the standings with 50 points, while the Lady Tigers follow with 36 points. Tennessee (33), Miami (30) and Florida (30) round out the top five.

Individually, SEC and NCAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, Hazelann Regis, held onto her No. 1 ranking in the 400 meters for a third week after clocking the second fastest time in the world in the event (51.62) at last week’s Armory Invitational.

Regis also helped the Lady Tigers 4×400-meter relay maintain its No. 1 ranking. The Tigers, led by fourth-ranked quartermiler Kelly Willie, are also listed at No. 1 in the 4×400 this week.

Others ranked among the nation’s leaders include Lady Tigers Neisha Bernard-Thomas and Tina Harris at No. 2 in the 800 meters and the long jump, respectively, and Tiger Xavier Carter at No. 2 in the 200 meters and Willie Bradley at No. 3 in the triple jump.

The LSU track and field team continues its indoor season this weekend when it travels to Nampa, Idaho for the Holiday Inn Team Invitational.
