BATON ROUGE — The second-largest crowd to see a women’s basketball game at LSU and men’s basketball’s upset over 22nd-ranked Mississippi State highlighted Super Tiger Weekend, which wrapped up on the LSU campus here Sunday.
Super Tiger Weekend, three days of LSU athletics that saw 14 events held on campus, had the Tigers winning every event that they hosted.
The action concluded on Sunday when the top-ranked LSU women’s basketball team ran its record to 19-1 overall with a 57-52 win over Auburn. The game was played before 14,256 fans at the Maravich Assembly Center, the second-largest women’s basketball crowd in the history of the program.
Super Tiger Weekend kicked off on Friday with the women’s swimming and diving team sweeping Rice and Houston followed by the eighth-ranked gymnastics team posting a convincing 197.250-191.425 win over Michigan State.
LSU’s top 10 men’s and women’s track and field teams were also in action on Friday, hosting the Bayou Bengal Invitational. In that meet, LSU’s Kelly Willie set the school-record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.69, while Tina Harris had a career-best and NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 21-1 1/2 in the long jump.
On Saturday, John Brady‘s men’s basketball team knocked off 22nd-ranked Mississippi State, 69-62, at the Maravich Center. The win, ran LSU’s record to 11-6 overall and put the Tigers in second place in the SEC Western Division with a 4-2 mark.
Saturday also had the nationally-ranked men’s and women’s tennis teams record five wins. The 12th-ranked men’s tennis team opened its dual match season with three victories on Saturday. The Tigers beat Southeastern Louisiana, 6-1, followed by a 6-0 victory over Centenary and a 6-0 win over Southern.
The 23rd-ranked women’s tennis team ran its record to 4-0 overall with a 7-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, followed by a 6-0 win over Southern.
The LSU swimming and diving teams wrapped up its home season on Saturday with a sweep of Delta State and Louisiana-Monroe at the LSU Natatorium.
LSU’s athletic teams combined to go 14-0 over the three day span and an estimated 26,000 fans turned out to watch LSU teams compete during Super Tiger Weekend.
