BATON ROUGE — The defending Southeastern Conference champion and fifth-ranked LSU softball team will kick off Super Tiger Weekend with an open practice on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. at Tiger Park.
The event is one of 14 Tiger sporting events over the three-day weekend that features the nationally ranked women’s basketball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s tennis and baseball teams, as well as the men’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams.
Coming off one of the best seasons in school history, which saw the LSU softball team advance to within seven outs of the National Championship game last season in the Women’s College World Series, the Tigers return eight letterwinners, including and All-American, four All-South Region selections, a member of the WCWS All-Tournament team and an All-SEC Freshman team selection, and welcome nine newcomers to the team in 2005.
The softball team will be in action again on Saturday as they practice at 10 a.m. at Tiger Park. LSU will open the 2005 season on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas as part of the UNLV Desert Classic. The Tigers will take on UCF and No. 9 Washington on Friday before concluding play on Saturday, Feb. 12 against No. 22 Illinois and Louisville, which is receiving votes in the top 25 poll.
