BATON ROUGE — LSU junior April Burkholder was named the SEC’s Gymnast of the Week it was announced Tuesday by the conference office. The honor is her first of the season and the third of her career.
Burkholder turned in the SEC’s top all-around score of the season last Friday at Alabama, notching a 39.575 in winning the individual overall title. The all-around crown marked her first of the year and the 12th of her career.
The Houston native also won the beam with a near perfect 9.975, the highest mark in the conference on the event this season. Burkholder also tied for first on the uneven bars, sharing the event crown with teammate Annie Gagnon for the second straight week as each posted a 9.900. In addition, Burkholder turned in scores of 9.875 on the floor and 9.825 on the vault.
Burkholder, a four-time All-American for the Tigers, is the reigning SEC and NCAA Central Region Gymnast of the Year.
The LSU gymnastics team returns to action this Friday when it hosts No. 15 Michigan State in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at 7 p.m.
