BATON ROUGE — LSU’s top-ranked Lady Tigers basketball team used another solid defensive performance to lead them to a 79-45 victory over Tulane on Sunday afternoon in the Pete Maravich Center.
LSU (13-0) held Tulane (8-5) to just 45 points on 18 of 57 shooting, forced 24 turnovers and blocked 12 shots.
“We really stepped it up defensively and it was nice to see some defensive execution lead to some baskets on the other end of the floor,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “This was another game where all of our kids got an opportunity to play against a quality opponent and when defense was the main focus of the game.”
Seimone Augustus led LSU with 23 points on 11 of 20 shooting, while Temeka Johnson and Scholanda Hoston each added 15 points. Johnson also chipped in with nine assists and Hoston drained three 3-pointers.
All 15 Lady Tigers played at least three minutes, including Sylvia Fowles who posted seven points, nine rebounds and a career-best five blocked shots.
LSU, which led the entire game, had to use a 15-1 run midway through the first half to break the game open. The Lady Tigers finished the first half on a 22-6 run and led 42-22 at the break.
Only four players for Tulane, who had a four-game win streak snapped, scored, led by Lakethia Hampton’s 24 points and D’Aundra Henry’s 12 points. Hampton added 14 rebounds in a losing effort.
LSU outrebounded Tulane 50-38 with five players collecting at least five rebounds each. Fowles led the way with nine, while Wendlyn Jones, Augustus, Ashley Thomas and Crystal White each had six, and Johnson pulled down five.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Rutgers on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. CST. Tip off. The Scarlett Knights are now 8-2 after upsetting both No. 8 Tennessee and No. 4 Texas this past week.
