Tigers Seek Redshirt Status for Tyrus Thomas

BATON ROUGE — LSU men’s basketball coach John Brady announced Wednesday that he is seeking redshirt status on Baton Rouge freshman Tyrus Thomas, who has been troubled almost since the beginning of practice with a neck injury.

Thomas briefly played in one exhibition game, but the McKinley High School product continued to be bothered by the neck, preventing him from practicing with the team. The medical redshirt status can be applied for to the NCAA at the conclusion of the season once it is proven the applicant did not play any more during the season in question.

“Tyrus sustained an injury to his neck which required him to miss almost three weeks of practice,” said Coach Brady. “After playing briefly in our second exhibition game, the injury then reoccurred which kept Tyrus out another 10 days. Tyrus them came to see me about the idea of redshirting. We talked it over with him and his mother and decided because of the practice time missed, a redshirt season would be the right course of action to take. We all feel, without reservation, this will be good for Tyrus and that he will be an excellent player for us in the years to come.”
