Purple Defeats Gold at Gymnastics Intrasquad Meet

BATON ROUGE — Behind a 39.325 all-around effort by sophomore Nicki Butler Purple defeated Gold, 156.925-156.775, Friday night at the LSU gymnastics intrasquad.

Counting four scores on each event towards the team total, the Purple team tallied marks of 39.325 on the vault, 38.875 on the bars, 39.325 on the beam and 39.400 on the floor to edge the Gold team who posted marks of 39.400 on the vault, 38.975 on the bars, 38.900 on the beam and 39.500 on the floor.

“I am pleased with what I saw tonight,” said LSU head coach D-D Breaux. “I thought we looked dynamic on vault and beam and I think we are right where we need to be on bars and floor.”

Leading all scorers in the all-around was sophomore Lisa Rennie. Counting four scores of 9.750 or better, including a meet-high 9.925 on the floor exercise, Rennie posted a 39.350 to edge Butler and fellow teammates April Burkholder and Kelly Phelan with finished with scores of 39.275 and 39.225, respectively.

In the first two rotations, Butler won the vault title with an impressive 9.925 effort, while Rennie, Burkholder and Terin Martinjak tied for top honors on the beam with identical scores of 9.850. Junior Kelly Lea led all scorers on the bars with her mark of 9.825.

“There were a few glitches tonight and we have a little bit of work to do, but we also have a little bit if time,” said Breaux.

The eighth-ranked Tigers open up the 2005 season Fri., Jan. 7 when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for a dual meet with Michigan State.
