Six Student-Athletes Honored for November Achievements

BATON ROUGE — The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for the month of November.

Roshonta LeBlanc, Ashleigh Clare-Kearney, Chris Wells, Dee Dee Henderson and Ryan Fontenot were selected as the student-athletes of the month for November, while Lauren Companioni was chosen the Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills Student-Athlete of the Month.

Each month, five student-athletes will be honored for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete will be honored through the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.

LeBlanc is a freshman guard on the women’s basketball team. The Port Arthur, Texas, native has seen action in all of the Lady Tigers’ games this season. Against Southern Miss, the former high school All-America nominee scored a season-best five points with four rebounds in 20 minutes.

An all-around competitor on the gymnastics team, Clare-Kearney was a five-time Level 10 Connecticut state champion. The Manchester, Conn., native also won consecutive state titles from 2002-04.

Wells is a sophomore on the men’s golf team. The business major from Mobile, Ala., played in eight tournaments as a freshman and recorded a 73.4 stroke average.

A freshman outfielder for the softball team, Henderson was an academic all-state selection in high school. The Marietta, Texas, native also earned all-state honors and was a member of the Texas All-Star East team.

Fontenot is a freshman hurdler on the men’s track and field team. The Baton Rouge native joins a Tiger track team that has won the 2004 NCAA Indoor National Championship and finished third in the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

A senior on the gymnastics team, Companioni was selected for her community service efforts. The Tampa, Fla., native earned All-America honors as a freshman on the floor exercise and is a two-time Academic All-America selection. The president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Companioni recently represented LSU at the NCAA Regional Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

These are six student-athletes that have gone the extra mile during the past month. For their efforts, they will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the CCACSA.
