COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The LSU women’s tennis team wrapped up the ITA Southwest Regionals Monday after a long weekend of many tough matches.
“We have seen a lot of really good tennis,” coach Tony Minnis said, “and the girls just kind of ran out of gas today. But we have faced a lot of quality opponents and played well against them.”
Marina Chiarelli and Tiffany Tucker, the only Lady Tigers left in the doubles main draw, played a quarterfinal match against Kewa Nichols and Story Tweedle-Yates of TCU. They lost that match, 8-3, falling short of a semifinal berth.
Freshman Staten Spencer picked up one win on the day, as she defeated other freshman LSU teammate Tiffany Tucker in a three-game showdown, 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. She lost her next match to Texas A&M’s Lauren Walker, who had beaten Lady Tiger Lauren Seaman in the previous match.
“We had some tough losses,” Minnis said, “but it was a really good tournament and now we definitely know what we need to work on to improve.”
The team’s next action will come at the SEC Coaches Classic, slated to begin Nov. 6.
