CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — For the second day in a row, LSU won all its matches at the ITA All-American Championships, pushing their total to two singles players and two doubles teams in the tournament’s main draw.
Jason Hazley won his portion of the qualifying singles bracket to move into Thursday’s main draw round of 64. He won his first set over Central Florida’s Antonio Sierra, but Sierra came back to win the second. Hazley recovered in the third set to claim the win.
“Jason Hazley continued to show improvement,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “Again he kept his composure. After losing the second set he was able to lift his level of play and win.”
LSU’s Ken Skupski will join Hazley in action tomorrow after automatically qualifying for the main draw. It will be the first match of the year for Skupski, who is ranked No. 18 in the nation.
Danny Bryan and Colt Gaston advanced to the doubles main draw with in 8-6 win over Dennis Andrade and Ricardo Almieda of Texas-San Antonio.
“Colt and Danny and making gains everyday,” Brown said. “They are gaining confidence and beginning to realize they can play at this level.”
Bryan and Gaston one of two pairs from LSU to reach the 32-team main draw of the largest tournament in college tennis. Hazley and Mark Growcott advanced after winning Tuesday.
The main draw includes most of the top-ranked singles and doubles players in America. Draws will be announced later today and can be found at www.ITAtennis.com.
