CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Tigers won three of four matches they played Monday in the first day of the qualifying rounds at the ITA All-American Tournament.
Jason Hazley advanced to the round of 64 in the singles draw with a straight-set win over Patrick Thompson of Ball State.
Senior Peter Richman went down with an injury in the third set of his match against Ball State’s Zachary Rath after winning the first set and struggling in the second.
Richman’s injury forced he and Ken Skupski to withdraw from the doubles tournament.
Hazley and Growcott “jumped ahead early” to cruise to a win their first match as a team, according to LSU head coach Jeff Brown.
In doubles, Colt Gaston and Danny Bryan hung on through three match points by SMU’s Henrik Soderberg and Peter Oredsson to win their third match of the tournament, 9-7.
“The competition gets tougher every day in this tournament,” Brown said. “We need to be ready for the challenge.”
