Vogler Named SEC Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Freshman goalkeeper Valerie Vogler was named the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week announced by the SEC office in Birmingham, Ala. on Monday. Vogler leads the team in shutouts, saves, goals against and goals against average.

“Having one of our players get SEC Defensive Player of the week speaks a lot for Val and the confidence we have in her,” said LSU co-head coach Danielle Fotopoulos. ” Our team is going in the right direction after our second week of SEC play and having one of our players selected as the player of the week speaks well for out team.”

With the honor, Vogler became the second LSU soccer player to be named SEC player of the week. Mandy Heintz became the first in September 2002.

On the road Vogler stepped up big as she only allowed one goal in the win against Ole Miss on Friday, Oct. 1, and held Mississippi State scoreless in the tie on Sunday, Oct. 3. In the two games Vogler racked up 14 saves.

“Val came up big for us this weekend making some big saves,” said Fotopoulos. “We put a lot of focus on our defense and it good that Val is able to make things easier for our defense so that they don’t get overwhelmed.”

Vogler in SEC play is 1-1-1 with her only loss coming to Vanderbilt in a double overtime game. Vogler has seen action in ten of the Tigers 12 games.
