CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The LSU men’s tennis team finished day one of the pre-qualifying round of the ITA Championships advancing one singles player.
Mark Growcott, who had a first-round bye, faced off against Hubert Chodkiewicz of Texas in round two, defeating him in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. Paul White, also with a first-round bye, was defeated in his second-round match by Oklahoma’s Lee Gregg, 6-2, 6-4.
Tigers Kevin Dessauer, Colt Gaston and Danny Bryan each played first-round matches today. Dessauer was defeated in his in three sets by Edson Abrao of Arkansas-Little Rock.
Bryan and Gaston both won their first matches, but then were defeated in the second round. Bryan defeated Oregon’s Chad Wilson before falling to Tim Bradshaw of Western Michigan. Gaston was victorious over Ivan D Argence Arceo of UC-Santa Barbara and then fell victim to Jose Orozco of Western Michigan.
In the doubles competition, the team of Dessauer and White was defeated by Northwestern’s Jamie Friedland and Willy Lock by a score of 8-6. The duo of Bryan and Gaston, which had a first-round bye, will face off in their doubles match tomorrow against the pair of Brett Binkley and Eigintas Vedrickas of Marquette at 11:30 CST.
Growcott continues his play tomorrow as well in the next round of singles competition against Marco Born of Middle Tennessee in an 8 a.m. CST match.
LSU’s Jason Hazley, Peter Richman and 18th-ranked Ken Skupsi will head to Chattanooga later in the week for the qualifying singles and doubles rounds.
