BATON ROUGE — Senior forward Artie Brown lifted LSU (3-0) over Tulane (1-1-1) in overtime to win 2-1 Friday night at the LSU Soccer Complex. The win marks just the third win in overtime for the Tigers since the program first started in 1995.
“I said leading up to this game that Tulane vs. LSU are epic games, they are what college athletics are all about and the rivalry that we have is just fantastic,” said LSU co-head coach George Fotopoulos. “I am just so very proud of my girls right now. They really showed a lot of heart and desire.”
Brown scored from 20 yards out as she placed the ball just in the upper right corner of the goal. The goal is Brown’s forth of the season and her third straight game-winning goal.
“That was a gut check for our team and a senior stepped up and made a difference, and that’s how championships are won,” said Fotopoulos. “My hat goes off to Artie. It was a great goal.”
The Tigers first goal of the game came on a rebound shot by junior Kate Ripple in the 10th minute. Senior Goalkeeper Robyn DesOrmeaux would come up with three huge saves in the second half, but in the 60th minute Linsay Morris of Tulane slipped one by the Tiger keeper.
“I am pleased with the team not folding in, and having the courage to come back and to win the game,” said Fotopoulos. “We were so worried because of the weather the crowd wouldn’t be there for us, and they were just awesome.”
LSU is currently on a three game winning streak and a 18 game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. The Tigers will look to keep the streak going as they will take on Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8. The Tigers will then travel to Ohio State next weekend to compete in the Buckeye Classic against Dayton and Ohio State.
