BATON ROUGE — LSU right fielder Jon Zeringue has been named this week to the 2004 USA TODAY/Sports Weekly first-team all-America squad.
Zeringue, the 2004 Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Year, is ranked No. 3 in the SEC in batting average (.396), No. 3 in hits (90), No. 3 in on-base percentage (.452), No. 5 in slugging percentage (.643), No. 6 in total bases (146) and No. 6 in doubles (19).
Zeringue, a junior from Thibodaux, La., batted a league-best .432 (51-for-118) in SEC regular-season games with six doubles, one triple, seven homers, 26 RBI and 28 runs.
Zeringue becomes the 17th player in LSU history to earn first-team all-America honors.
Zeringue is joined on the 2004 first-team all-America outfield by Chris Rahl of William & Mary and Marshall Hubbard of North Carolina.
The remainder of the first team includes catcher Landon Powell of South Carolina; first baseman Billy Becher of New Mexico State; second baseman Jed Lowrie of Stanford; third baseman Alex Gordon of Nebraska; shortstop Dustin Pedroia of Arizona State; and utility/DH Stephen Head of Ole Miss.
The first-team pitchers are Jered Weaver of Long Beach State; J.P Howell of Texas; Wade Townsend and Philip Humber of Rice; and Blair Erickson of UC-Irvine.
