Track and Field Remains Ranked at Nos. 1 & 2 in Latest Poll

BATON ROUGE — There was little movement at the top of the track rankings this week as the Lady Tigers maintained their stronghold on the No. 1 position and the Tigers held steady at No. 2 in the latest Trackwire 25 polls released Tuesday.

The women’s top-four remained unchanged from a week ago with the Lady Tigers on top, followed by UCLA, Texas and Nebraska. South Carolina jumped three spots into this week’s No. 5 position, replacing Florida who slipped to No. 7.

Arkansas held on to the No. 1 ranking in the men’s poll for a second consecutive week. The Razorbacks are trailed by LSU, Florida and Auburn who are knotted at No. 3 and Arizona State and Baylor who are tied at the No. 5 position.

In the individual events, both LSU’s men’s and women’s 4×100-meter relay teams are again ranked No. 1 in the nation. Tigers John Moffitt and Bennie Brazell as well as Lady Tiger Lolo Jones also own No. 1 rankings this week.

For Moffitt, the reigning SEC Field Athlete of the Week, it marks the fourth straight week he has been listed as the nation’s top-ranked long jumper.

This week marks the debut of All-American Bennie Brazell at No. 1 in the 400-meter hurdles. Brazell, the NCAA’s top performer with a time of 49.19, is undefeated in the event this season.

Jones held on to her No. 1 ranking in the 100-meter hurdles for the fourth straight week after winning the prestigious Penn Relays over the weekend.

LSU will take two weeks off before returning to action, May 13-16, at the SEC Championships in Oxford, Miss.
