BATON ROUGE — LSU All-American John Moffitt was named the SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year in a vote by conference head coaches.
Moffitt, a native of Winnsboro, La., twice earned All-America honors during the indoor season, winning the national title in the long jump and earning runner-up honors in the triple jump. Moffitt, the first LSU athlete to ever win a NCAA title in the indoor long jump, won the crown with a distance of 26-9 3/4 at the national meet.
Prior to his national title, Moffitt became the first athlete in school history to surpass the 27-foot barrier in the indoor long jump, setting school, meet and personal records en route to winning the prestigious Armory Invitational with a distance of 27-1 3/4. The mark was the second-best in the United States and the fourth-best in the world during the 2004 indoor season.
In addition to his success in the long jump, Moffitt was exceptional in the triple jump, earning All-America honors for the second straight year. He was part of the Tigers’ unprecedented 1-2-3 finish in the event, placing second at the NCAA Championships with a PR distance of 55-1. Moffitt’s mark, the fourth best by a United States’ athlete this season, ranks as the third-best all-time in Tiger history.
In addition, Moffitt was an all-SEC selection in both the long jump and the triple jump, recording runner-up finishes in both events at the SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Ky.
