BATON ROUGE — For the first time this season both the Tiger and Lady Tiger track and field teams are ranked No. 1 in the country according to the Trackwire 25 poll. It marks the first time the two teams have simultaneously topped the standings since Jan. 25, 2003.
The Lady Tigers held on to their No. 1 ranking for the 11th straight week, while the Tigers moved up one spot from No. 2 to claim their first No. 1 ranking of the season.
In the women’s poll, the Lady Tigers are followed by UCLA and Texas who are knotted at No. 2. Nebraska and Texas round out the top-five in fourth and fifth, respectively.
For the men, the SEC claims four of the five top spots as Arkansas is No. 2, Florida is No. 3, Arizona State follows at No. 4 and Auburn is fifth.
Individually, LSU has 17 athletes and four relay teams ranked among the top-12 in 24 events.
Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers are ranked No. 1 in the 4×100-meter relay. All-American Lolo Jones holds down the No. 1 position in the 100- meter hurdles.
Three athletes, in Tigers John Moffitt and LeJuan Simon and Lady Tiger Muna Lee, are ranked in two events.
Moffitt and Simon are each ranked in both the long jump and the triple jump. Moffitt, the indoor national champion in the long jump, is ranked No. 1 in the event and No. 4 in the triple jump. Simon is fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.
Lee comes in at No. 3 in the 100 meters and No. 4 in the 200 meters this week.
The LSU track and field team returns to action this weekend when it hosts the LSU Combined Events and the LSU Alumni Gold, April 16-17, at Bernie Moore Stadium.
