BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU junior Heath West was named the Southeastern Conference’s Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on April 8.
West, a junior from Dothan, Ala., received the award following his 12th-place finish at the fourth-annual LSU Spring Invitational on April 4 in Baton Rouge as he helped lead the Tigers to the team title by firing a 4-under par 212. LSU rallied from 12 strokes back entering the final round to capture the improbable victory on their home course.
“This is a tremendous honor for Heath because he is a great player and he deserved this recognition for helping our team to a victory in a big tournament,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones.
West finished up the event by firing a final-round 4-under 68 en route to his sixth top-20 finish of the season. He has also recorded four top-10 finishes and has a team-best 72.7 stroke average to go with 13 rounds of par or better. He has been the Tigers’ top finisher in all three of their tournament wins this season.
The Tigers will next head to Sea Island, Ga., to compete at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championships April 16-18 at Sea Island Golf Club.
The award marks the second time in West’s career that he has been honored as Golfer of the Week by the conference office. West also won the award on March 20, 2002 after leading LSU to a fourth-place finish in the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational. He is the first Tiger golfer to be named Golfer of the Week since John Humphries was awarded on March 6, 2003 after claiming medalist honors at the LSU Spring Invitational, which the Tigers won.
