BATON ROUGE — National championships in men’s and women’s indoor track and field moved LSU into 10th place in the latest standings for the United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup.

LSU’s current point total stands at 403, which puts the Tigers less than 100 points out of sixth place in the standings. Michigan stands in first place with 817 points, followed by Stanford (701.75 points), Florida (518), Penn State (510) and UCLA (508.75).

Ohio State starts the bottom half of the top 10 with 502 points, followed by North Carolina (453), Wisconsin (438.75), Georgia (413.5) and LSU (403).

LSU received 300 of its 403 points by claiming national titles in football, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field. The Tigers picked up their remaining 103 points from swimming and diving. The men’s swimming and diving team added 53 points for a 21st place showing at the NCAA meet, while the women’s swimming and diving team contributed 50 points for a 24th place finish at the national championships.

In the next release of the Directors’ Cup standings, the Tigers will add 85 points to their total for a third place finish at the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. In addition, LSU still stands to earn the bulk of their points this spring as nine of the Tiger teams currently competing are ranked among the top 30 in the nation, including five in the top 10.

The United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup was developed as joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s. Each national champion receives 100 points.
