AUSTIN, Texas — LSU track and field sophomore Britney Henry broke the school record in the hammer throw Thursday at the 77th-annual Texas Relays held at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Spokane, Wash., native threw 202-1 in her first attempt of the afternoon shattering her previous personal record by seventeen feet. Henry finished second to Loree Smith of Colorado State who threw an amazing 220-0, and ahead of All-American Laura Gerraughty of North Carolina (200-11).
“Some of the best throwers in the United States were here today, and when she can step up to the ring and compete with those people then maybe you are going to learn how to do it anytime,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry.
On the track, junior Katie Denton and the women’s 4×800-meter relay team had impressive showings, posting times that rank among the top- 10 all time at LSU. Denton ran the seventh-best 5,000 meter time in Lady Tiger history, clocking a personal best 17:38.97.
The foursome of Neisha Bernard-Thomas, Michelle Hymel, Whitney Mitchell and Ruth Nanyinza turned in the seventh-best 4×800-meter time in school history (8:46.30) to place fourth overall.
For the Tigers, junior Jimmy Wiggins posted a PR time of 14:39.25 in the 5,000 meter run, placing third, while Sam Mwape finished with a time of 14:59.86.
Action from the 77th-annual Texas Relays will continue tomorrow with a majority of the running and the field events getting under way.
