Tigers Tied for 24th After Day One at NCAA Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LSU men’s swimming and diving team sits tied for 24th-place after day one of the 2004 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from the Nassau County Aquatic Center.

The Tigers are currently tied with the U.S. Naval Academy after accumulating eight points on Thursday. Auburn leads the meet by an overwhelming 211 points.

LSU qualified for the 400-meter medley relay consolation finals, and finished fifth (12th overall) with a time of 3:36.46. Evan Martinec, Christian Clausen, Neil Lowe and Chris Stanczyk swam a time of 3:35.45 in the preliminary morning session. Texas set an NCAA record, winning the event in 3:25.38 seconds.

Martinec, Lowe, Stanczyk joined Ross Hebert in the prelims of the 200-meter freestyle relay to begin the meet. The group placed 17th (1:30.34), while Auburn won the event with a world-record time of 1:25.46.

Hebert was LSU’s lone representative in individual events on Thursday. The sophomore placed 49th in the 50-meter freestyle (22.96).

Competition resumes Friday at 11 a.m. with the 200-meter medley relay.
