BATON ROUGE — LSU’s sweep of the men’s and women’s NCAA Indoor Track and Field national titles on Saturday ran the University’s total number of national championships to 43.
The 43 national championships, three of which have been won during the 2003-04 season, are the most of any school in the Southeastern Conference. Earlier this year, the Tigers claimed the national title in football with a 21-14 win over Oklahoma in the Nokia Sugar Bowl.
The 43 national championships by LSU is three more than Arkansas, who ranks second in the SEC with 40 national titles. Georgia is third in the SEC with 18 titles, while Florida is fourth with 16 to its credit.
The sweep of the indoor men’s and women’s national titles is the first of its kind in the sport of college track and field.
Of LSU’s 43 national titles, 10 have come since the year 2000. In addition, 24 of LSU’s national titles have been won by women’s teams, while 18 have come from the men. Women’s track and field leads all LSU sports in national times with a total of 23, 12 outdoors and 11 indoors.
Baseball has claimed the next highest total with five, all coming under Skip Bertman‘s direction from 1991 to 2000. Men’s outdoor track and field along with men’s golf have claimed four national titles each, while football and men’s indoor track and field have each won a pair of national championships.
Boxing and men’s basketball have claimed the Tigers’ other two national titles.
