Dirks Named LSWA Baseball Pitcher of the Week

BATON ROUGE — McNeese State outfielder Charlie Kingrey and LSU pitcher Clay Dirks have been named Louisiana’s baseball players of the week, the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association announced on Tuesday.

In four games last week, Kingrey went 10 for 17 (.588), scored five runs and drove in another nine runs for the Cowboys. In addition, Kingrey belted a pair of home runs and added four doubles for a .850 slugging percentage for the Cowboys.

Dirks pitched a complete-game shutout leading the Tigers to a 6-0 win over eight-ranked Tulane last week. In just his third collegiate start, Dirks limited the Green Wave to no runs on four hits in nine innings of work. The left-hander struck out seven and walked one as only two Tulane hitters advanced to second base. He also retired 20 of the final 22 batters he faced.

Now 2-0 with a 1.37 earned run average this year, Dirks’ shutout was the first by a Tiger pitcher since March 14, 2003 when Brian Wilson blanked Florida on five hits.
