BATON ROUGE — The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for the month of March.
Andrew Lanahan, Amber Long, Arlington Highsmith, Skyler Green and Hanna Biernacka were selected as the student-athletes of the month for March, while Robbie Moon was chose the Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills Student-Athlete of the Month.
Each month, five student-athletes will be honored for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete will be honored through the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.
Lanahan is a junior from Jacksonville, Fla. on the men’s golf team. The general studies major transferred to LSU after being named an All-American at Midland Junior College in Texas. Last year, he played in the United States Amateur Championship at Oak Hills in Bloomfield, Mich.
Long is a freshman guard on the women’s basketball team from Irmo, S.C. The criminal justice major has played in nine games this season for the Lady Tigers and scored a career-high four points against Southeastern Louisiana with a career-high six assists against Sam Houston State.
A native of Miami, Fla., Highsmith was a member of the national champion football team last fall. He was a linebacker for the Tigers this past season.
Green, also a member of the national champion football team, was an All-America selection by the Associated Press, SI.com, ESPN.com and CollegeFootballNews.com. In addition, the Westwego, La., native, was an All-Southeastern Conference selection after leading the nation in punt returns.
A native of Sodertalje, Sweden, Biernacka has started 23 games at forward for the Lady Tiger basketball team this season. The freshman scored a career-high 14 points against Auburn and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds against UL-Monroe.
Moon, a senior engineering major on the LSU swimming and diving team from Baton Rouge, was selected for his community service efforts. He spoke to Greenville Elementary as part of its “Character First” assembly to enlighten the children to the importance of reading and education. In addition, he visited the children’s ward at Our Lady of the Lady hospital to read to many of the sick children.
These are six student-athletes that have gone the extra mile during the past month. For their efforts, they will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the CCACSA.
