BATON ROUGE — Lolo Jones came close to a Carl Maddox Fieldhouse record in the 60-meter hurdles Friday in LSU’s last home indoor meet of the season.
Jones, LSU’s defending national champion in the 60-meter hurdles, had the second-best time ever posted in the event in Maddox Fieldhouse history with an 8.11.
“That’s the second fastest time ever run in this building, and this building has been here a long time,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “It’s an automatic (NCAA) qualifier and that’s good.”
The meet was preparation for the Tigers’ post-season run at the national title, which begins next week at the SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Ky.
“We’re a week out from the SEC Championship so you’re a little cautious about what you want to do and yet you still want to do a few things,” Henry said.
“We got after some things with some people who are going to be big impact people at the SEC Championships, and then we lined up some people who just need the opportunity to get on the track and compete.”
Jones also placed second in the 60-meter dash behind teammate Muna Lee. Tiffany Jones was third in the hurdles with an 8.68.
Kellie Willie won the men’s 60-meter dash with a 6.81, and Chris Jackson placed second in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Lady Tigers also performed well in the field. Katie McKeever won the shot put with a 47-03.75 and Mallory McDonald won the weight throw with a 62-11.50. Karmen Payne placed first in the long jump with a 20-00.25 leap.
B.J. Brooks and Brandon Conine tied for third in the men’s pole vault, topping out at 14-05.25.
Joe Lochridge and John Chretien were first and second, respectively, in the shot put. Matt Vincent and Brad Sowa also swept the top two spots in the weight throw.
