BATON ROUGE — LSU’s John Moffitt was named the SEC’s Male Field Athlete of the Week it was announced Wednesday by the conference office. It marks the second time in three weeks Moffitt has received the honor as he was also recognized during the week of Feb. 2.
Moffitt, a senior from Winnsboro, La., broke his own school record in the long jump Saturday at the Armory Invitational in New York. The three-time All-American jumped an LSU all-time best 27-1 3/4 to become just the first athlete in Tiger history to surpass the 27-foot barrier in the indoor long jump.
Moffitt’s meet-winning distance currently ranks No. 1 in both the SEC and the NCAA this season, as well as at No. 2 in the United States and the No. 3 in the world.
In addition to his outstanding performance in the long jump, Moffitt went on to finish second in the triple jump competition, recording a PR and NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 54-4.
For his efforts, Moffitt was named the Armory Invitational’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete.
The LSU track and field team returns to action this Friday when it hosts the LSU Twilight at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. with the field events and continue at 6 p.m. with the running events.
