BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Darrel Mitchell and Temeka Johnson were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Players of the Week for men’s and women’s basketball, it was announced by the media organization on Wednesday.
Mitchell, a guard for the Tigers’, led LSU to a victory at Florida last week with 18 points on six of nine field goals. The St. Martinville, La., native scored the game tying and go-ahead point for the Tigers in the second half rally. He is shooting over 50 percent from the 3-point arc in Southeastern Conference play.
Johnson, a guard for the Lady Tigers, led LSU to victories over Arkansas and Florida by averaging 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 10.5 assists in the two games. The New Orleans native came two rebounds shy of a triple double against Arkansas with 14 points, a school-record tying 15 assists and eight rebounds. Johnson, who was also named SEC Player of the Week, turned around the next game at Florida to score 17 points and dish out six assists, including breaking the school record for career assists during the game.
It is the first time either player has received the honor this season.
