BATON ROUGE — Coming off a 3-1 showing at the UNLV Softball Classic last weekend, the LSU softball team climbed to No. 13 in the NFCA/USA Today Coaches poll and to No. 16 in the ESPN/USA Softball poll.
The Tigers (6-3) moved up one spot in the first coaches poll since the preseason poll was released on Jan. 29. LSU also climbed from No. 17 to No. 16 this week in the ESPN poll.
LSU posted run-rule wins over Portland State and Wisconsin, 10-2 and 10-1, last Friday and defeated Utah, 2-0, on Saturday. The Tigers’ only loss was to No. 2 California, 5-1.
This weekend LSU will host the Purple & Gold Challenge. The three-day tournament features Alcorn State, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss and Texas-San Antonio. The Tigers begin play on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Alcorn State, before taking on UTSA at 5:30 p.m. Action begins on Friday at 9 a.m. as Southern Miss battles Texas-San Antonio.
