Johnson and Augustus Named Candidates for Wade Trophy

ATLANTA, Ga. — Seimone Augustus and Temeka Johnson, members of LSU’s 15th-ranked Lady Tigers basketball team, have both been named as Top 21 candidates for the 2004 State Farm Wade Trophy, it was announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) on Wednesday.

Augustus, a sophomore guard from Baton Rouge, leads the Lady Tigers with 18.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game through 24 games. She also ranks first in the Southeastern Conference in scoring average in conference games only, posting 20.8 points per game. Her 91.0 free throw percentage leads the team and is among the best in the nation.

Johnson, a senior point guard from New Orleans, is putting up 12.1 points, grabbing 5.3 rebounds and dishing out 8.1 assist per contest. She leads the SEC in assists and is almost averaging a double double in conference games only with 10.3 points and 9.1 assists per outing. This past weekend Johnson became LSU’s career leader in assists and is averaging 7.0 assists in her 82 games played.

The 21 candidates, which include last year’s winner, Diana Taurasi from UConn, and fellow SEC players Shameka Christon of Arkansas and Vanessa Hayden of Florida, were selected by a vote of committee members comprised of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball administrators. Members of the committee will select the winner of the State Farm Wade Trophy from the 10-member Kodak All-America Team and will be announced during the WBCA National Convention in early April.
