NEW ORLEANS — The LSU women’s golf team came up with three players in the Top 10 and a good second place team finish after the first tournament of the spring concluded in miserable conditions Tuesday at English Turn.
The Tigers remained in second place at the conclusion of the Nokia Sugar Bowl/Tulane Invitational, posting a final round of 920 as teams played the entire round in rain and cold over one of the tougher layouts on the PGA Tour. LSU finished second at 65-over 929 for the 54-holes. Tulane was the winner, shooting rounds of 288-301-306 for a 31-over par 895 score. Ole Miss was seven shots back of LSU in third at 936.
Vicky Meyer led the LSU individuals with a fifth place finish with a 13-over par 229 as the scores rolled upward in the bad weather. Meyer had rounds of 74-74-81. Freshman Alexis Rather would finish eighth at 17-over 233 (76-78-79) and Brooke Shelton tied for ninth at 18-over 234 (75-78-81).
Mary Ellen Jacobs went wire-to-wire to win the tournament, posting a 54-hole tournament for the winning Green Wave of three-over 219 (69-72-78).
“The conditions were just so difficult,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “But these girls gutted it out and got us home still in second place which I think is very good for us. We have three in the top 10 in the tournament that makes me feel very good. These girls worked so very hard and now we take this and move on to the next stop.”
The LSU women’s golf team hopes to find better weather in Parrish, Fla., when the Lady Tigers participate in the Michigan State hosted Central District Invitational, February 23-24.
