BATON ROUGE — LSU’s John Moffitt was named the SEC’s Male Field Athlete of the Week it was announced Thursday by the conference office.
Moffitt is the second LSU Tiger to garner SEC Athlete of the Week honors this season as fellow jumper LeJuan Simon was awarded the honor last week.
Moffitt, a senior from Winnsboro, La., shattered the school record in the men’s long jump last week at the Bayou Bengal Invitational, jumping 26-11. Moffitt bettered the previous school record mark of 26-9 set by six-time NCAA champion Walter Davis in 2002.
Moffitt’s mark not only ranks as the best in the SEC and the NCAA this season, but it also ranks as the second-best in the world to date.
In posting the record setting jump, the three-time All-American came up just shy of the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse record of 27-0 ? in the event, a record that was set by Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis in 1981.
Moffitt and the rest of the LSU track and field team return to action this Saturday when they travel to Nampa, Idaho, for the United Heritage Invitational.
