Augustus Named to Women’s Wooden Award Watch List

LOS ANGELES — Seimone Augustus, a sophomore guard for the 14th-ranked LSU Lady Tigers basketball team, was named to the Women’s Wooden Award Midseason All-American Team Top 20 Candidates, it was announced by the committee over the weekend.

A Baton Rouge native, Augustus is one of 20 players from around the nation selected from a preseason list who are candidates for the 2003-04 Player of the Year Award, the inaugural Wooden Award for the women.

Augustus currently leads the 17-3 Lady Tigers with 17.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 50.5 percent from the floor and a Southeastern Conference best 89.5 percent from the free throw line.

In March the John R. Wooden Award committee will cut list of 20 candidates down to an official voting ballot of approximately 15 players. Then over 200 voters, comprised of sports media members and women’s college basketball experts across the nation, will vote for the five-member All-American team and the Player of the Year to be announced in April.

Augustus is one of three sophomores among the list of the 20 candidates and one of five players from the Southeastern Conference.
