Martinec Named SEC Men’s Swimmer of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU senior Evan Martinec was named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Martinec, a native of Tacoma, Wash., earned the honor for the second time in his career and first since Feb. 2, 2003. The five-time All-American won all three events he swam in against 14th-ranked Texas A&M last Friday.

Martinec teamed with Christian Clausen, Neil Lowe and Ross Hebert to open Friday’s meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.44). The time was the conference’s third-fastest mark of the season. He returned to the water in the 100-yard backstroke and set an LSU Natatorium record in earning an NCAA “B” cut time of 48.07. Not to be outdone, the first-team All-SEC selection won his final event of the day, the 100-yard butterfly, with a mark of 49.14.

Martinec currently holds school records in the 100-yard backstroke (46.97), 200-yard medley relay (1.27.81) and 400-yard medley relay (3:13.58). During the 2002-03 season, he became the first Tiger swimmer to earn All-SEC honors since 1998.

Martinec and seven other Tiger seniors will be honored this Saturday at noon during Senior Day as LSU takes on Florida State in the final home meet of the year.
