BATON ROUGE — Chris Howard, formerly of the NCAA Office in Indianapolis, has been named associate athletics director for NCAA compliance at LSU, it was announced Monday.

Howard comes to LSU after serving as assistant director of enforcement services at the NCAA since June of 2002 and as a representative for agent, gambling and amateurism issues at the NCAA for the previous year.

“Chris brings to LSU an incredible amount of knowledge and experience from the highest levels of NCAA compliance operations,” said LSU athletics director Skip Bertman. “I’m excited about having Chris join our staff to continue the level of excellence that we have established in this critical area of our department.”

Howard will serve as the compliance coordinator and liaison between LSU and the NCAA and SEC offices for NCAA rules interpretations and other matters. He will also develop and coordinate educational components for staff, student-athletes, booster organizations and entities outside the athletics department on NCAA and SEC rules and regulations.

Howard was a combat medical specialist in the United States Army from 1986 to 1995 before earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1997. He earned a Master’s degree in education from Kansas in 2001 and a juris doctor degree from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2001.

After serving an internship at Kansas in facility operations and event management, he was named assistant program supervisor in charge of student support services in 1997. Howard moved into private law practice for two years before joining the NCAA office in 2001.
