BATON ROUGE — The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for the month of November.
Kyle Perry, Marvin Pinnock, Amp Hill, Vanessa Freeman and Hali Saucier were selected as the student-athletes of the month for November, while Lauren Companioni was chosen the Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills Student-Athlete of the Month.
Each month, five student-athletes will be honored for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete will be honored through the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.
Perry is a true freshman right-handed pitcher from Ball High School in Galveston, Texas. He was a 28th-round selection of the Atlanta Braves in the 2003 draft. He is projected to be a contributor on the mound this season, mostly in a relief role.
Pinnock is a freshman distance runner on the LSU track and cross country teams. The Spanishtown, Jamaica, native did not compete this fall.
A Jacksonville, Fla., native, Hill is a freshman wide receiver on the football team. One of the nation’s premiere prep wide receivers, he was injured during preseason camp and will take a redshirt this season.
Freeman is a freshman middle blocker on the Tiger volleyball team. The Granger, Texas, native, redshirted this season and plans to major in pre-natal nursing.
A freshman from Gig Harbor, Wash., Saucier is a member of the LSU diving team. The kinesiology major recently took third place in the semifinals of the three-meter competition at the Minnesota Invitational while finishing eighth in the platform.
Companioni, a senior on the Tiger gymnastics team from Tampa, Fla., was selected for her community service efforts. She has participated in a fundraiser for LSU’s Block and Bridle Club, helped raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital through the Steve Hood’s Total Dance Experience, and took part in the Capital Area Alzheimer Service’s “Walk/Run to Remember”.
These are six student-athletes that have gone the extra mile during the past month. For their efforts, they will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the CCACSA.
Previous student-athletes honored this year include Dave Petersan and Joseph Addai of the football team, Pete Coley and Hazelann Regis of the track and field teams, Clay Dirks of the baseball team, April Burkholder of the gymnastics team, Khalilah Mitchell of the women’s basketball team, Melody Clark of the volleyball team and Brandon Bass of the men’s basketball team. Jason Spandoni of the football team and Chelsea Agar of the women’s soccer team were the previous CHAMPS student-athletes of the month.
