MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Freshman Alyson Carlyon qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Regionals and three other Tigers put together impressive performances to cap a successful fall season this past weekend at the Minnesota Invitational.
Carlyon entered the finals of the 3-meter competition with a score of 448.20 in the semifinals. The Kirkland, Wash. improved nearly five points to take third-place honors at 452.50, a mark that qualified the freshman for the NCAA Zone Diving Regionals in March. On Friday, she finished fifth in the 3-meter event.
“The divers did a fantastic job,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “Alyson Carlyon really stepped up to the plate with a stellar performance in the 3-meter.”
Hali Saucier was the other lone Lady Tiger diver to compete this past weekend. Saucier took third place in the semifinals of the 3-meter competition with a score of 420.70. The freshman also competed in her first official platform diving event, placing eighth out of 14 divers (292.45). Minnesota’s Rebecca Cornthwaite won the event with a mark of 384.45.
The LSU men were led by Andy Crum who turned in the best performance of his career when he placed fifth in the 1-meter (260.25). Crum also competed in the platform competition finishing seventh with a score of 346.05. Andrew Keane continued his recent success taking eighth-place honors in the finals of the 1-meter (234.95).
“All of our divers have worked very, very hard this weekend,” said Shaffer. “We have trained right through the competition and they’ve still managed to rise to the occasion and perform well. I am very proud of them all.”
LSU will resume its season with the Georgia Invitational, Jan. 3-5 in Athens, Ga.
