BATON ROUGE — LSU punter Donnie Jones is one of 10 players from across the country named to the list of semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award, the Greater Augusta Sports Council announced on Thursday.
The Ray Guy Award is presented annually the college football’s top punter. The list of semifinalists will be trimmed to three later this month with the winner being announced on Dec. 11 at the ESPN College Football Award Show in Orlando, Fla.
Jones, a Second Team All-Southeastern Conference pick in 2002, is currently averaging 42.9 yards on 38 punts. LSU’s net punting average of 40.3 ranks second in the SEC and 19th in the nation. Of his 38 punts, Jones has had 12 downed inside the 20-yard line.
Jones, a Baton Rouge native, currently holds the LSU career record for punts with 206 and punting yards with 8,670 and he ranks second in school history with a 42.1 punting average.
Other Ray Guy Semifinalists include: Kyle Basler (Washington State), Vinnie Burns (Virginia Tech), Duston Colquitt (Tennessee), Kyle Larson (Nebraska), Andy Lee (Pittsburgh), Tom Malone (Southern Cal), Adam Podlesh (Maryland), Matt Prater (Central Florida) and B.J. Sander (Ohio State).
